Family Planning Qld

Maranoa Tour 5th Nov - 11th Nov 2008

Family Planning Queensland (FPQ) visited the Maranoa in November 2008.  Maranoa Health Enhancement Program (MHEP) with the assistance of Spiritus, Queensland Health and Lifeline brought Family Planning queensland to the Maranoa, providing information to school children, parents and teachers.

Alison Noller, Regional Education Coordinator, Family Planning Queensland spoke to approximately 150 school children and teachers in the MHEP area covering Injune, Mitchell, Bymount, St George, Surat and Yuleba Schools.

Topics on communicating about sexuality with children, feel safe, puberty for boys and girls were discussed at the various sessions.

Parents attending sessions learnt how to be more approachable regarding sexual matters and their children, puberty for parents and sexual health.

Resources - DVDs and books, including "Talking about it", "High Talk", "Everyone's Got a Bottom" and "Traffic Lights" are available through PFQ.

MITCHELL PLAYGROUP

Mitchell Playgroup celebrated their end of year breakup on the 9th Dec 2008 with a massive rollup of 13 adults and 15 children.  Guests included

  • Vanessa Jackson (Spiritus)
  • Katrina Marsh (Razamatz Kids Roma)

Spiritus was responsible for providing funding for the day and Katrina delivered a Kinder Muskik session for all.  The playgroup was established this year with the support of Sue Barford from the Roma Neighbourhood Centre, Anna Cross from Qld Health Mitchell Health Services and Julie Kennedy from Maranoa Health Enhancement Program.  Throughout the year in excess of 20 families have utilised the service.

The Maranoa Health Enhancement Program provided Flexible Funding to assist with the purchase of equipment to facilitate the activities of the playgroup.


NAIDOC WEEK

St George this year the community has celbrated NAIDOC Week with an awards ceremony on the 18th July 2008.  These awards are for the many people within our comminty who characterise themselves as proud Indigenous people and acknowledge these individuals, praise them and provide them recognition they deserve.

Maranoa Health Enhancement Program would like to congratulate all nominnees and award winners for 2008

Kyndra Wilson - Indigenous Junior Female Student of the Year.

Danielle Saunders - Indigenous Employee of the Year.

Kyle Smith - Indigenous Junior Male Student of the Year.

St George has also celebrated as a community with a week long events this year from the 15th to 19th September.  The activities included a flag raising ceremony at the council office, face painting, boomerang painting, Indigenous games, story telling and art competitions and much more...........

                                                                           

 

 


Safer Venues in St George

Maranoa Health Enhancement Program was involved in the Safer Venues Project.  This project's aim is to reduce the negative consequences such as violence and crime surrounding licensed venues and to promote a more positive aspect to the hotels.  A safety evaluation/audit is undertaken regarding the aspects of the venue.  Safety issues include food or beverage served, street lighting, exit signage, parking, and transport such as pcik up and drop off zones, security, toilets, telephone facilities, responsible service of alcohol, workpace health and safety and more.

All the hotels in St George participated in this project.  The winner of the 2008 St George Safer Venues Award was announced at a ceremony at the amphitheatre on the banks of the Balonne River on Monday 1st September 2008. 

Congratulations to the Australian Hotel who received the Safer Venues Achievement Award for 2008.

 


 

SCHOOL'S OUT

Maranoa Health Enhancement Program will be running the School's Out Program with Michael Colling being the presenter from Melbourne

This presentation is a program for male children aged between 10 and 16 years.

Some of the topics covered will include

  • Communication
  • Anger Awareness and Management
  • Stress Management
  • Masculinity
  • Body Image
  • Mens Health - Drug & Alcohol, Sexual Health, Mental Health
  • How to help out a MATE
  • Goal setting and being positive Male Leaders

This program will cover all these school's across the Maranoa

Yuleba, Wallumbilla, Surat, Injune, Acadia Valley, Bymount East, St George, Roma, Mitchell, Dunkeld, Mungallalla, Muckadilla, Dirranbandi, Begonia, Teelbah and Wycombe.
